Part–A

Reading-I

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:                                 1x5=5

A reason, why people at school reading books, is to please their teacher. The teacher has said that this, that or the other is a good book, and that it is a sign of good taste to enjoy it. So, a number of boys and girls, anxious to please their teacher, get the book and read it. Two or three of them many genuinely like it for its own sake and be grateful to the teacher for putting it in their way. But may will not honestly like it, or will persuade themselves that they like it. And that does a great deal of harm. The people, who cannot like the book, run the risk of two things, happening to them: either they put off the idea of the book or they get a guilty conscience about the whole thing, they feel that they do not like what they ought to like and that therefore there is something wrong with them.

1. (a) Is the statement “a number of boys and girls like their teacher’s prescribed book honestly” true or false or irrelevant?

Read the text answer any three of the following questions (2-6):

The porter took up his basket and followed the young woman until she came to magnificent, lofty house facing a great courtyard. Its doors were of ebony plated with gold. Here she unveiled her face and knocked, and the door was opened by a girl of surpassing beauty-Her forehead was white as a' lily and her eyes were more lustrous than gazelle’s. Her brows were crescent moons, her cheeks anemones, and her mouth like the crimson ruby on King Solomon’s ring. Her teeth were brighter than a string of pearls. At the sight of the girl the porter was so overwhelmed with wonder that the basket nearly fell off his head. “Surely this is the most auspicious day of my life!” he though. “Pray, come in sister,” said the girl who had opened the door, “and let this weary porter but down his burden.” The porter followed the two girls into a spacious and nobly-vaulted hall. The ceiling was ‘wondrously carved in patterns of elaborate design and the walls were hung with tapestry of silk and rich brocade. In the centre of the hall a fountain played in a pool of crystal water, and near the far side stood a couch of alabaster inlaid with diamonds and covered with a red silken quilt embroidered with pearls: A third girl, slim and exquisitely beautiful, was reclining on the couch. Her face was radiant as the full moon and all the witchcraft of Babylon was in her eyes. A paragon of Arabian grace, she was like a star twinkling in a cloudless sky or a golden dome shimmering in the night. The girl, who was the eldest of the three, rose from the couch and, walking slowly to the middle of the ' hall, said to her sisters: “Why are you standing idly by? Come, let us take down this heavy basket from the porter’s head.” The three girls helped the porter put down his basket, and when they had taken out the contents and arranged them in their proper places, they handed him two pieces of gold, saying: “Take this; and go your way.”

2. Describe the ‘hall’ refered to in the story within four sentences.

Read the following poem and answer any two of the questions given below (11-14):

I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

11. Write a short critical summary of the poem.
